European Coordination of Film Festivals
The European Coordination of Film Festivals, a European Economic Interest Group (EEIG), is composed of over 230 festivals of different themes and sizes. All member countries of the European Union are represented as well as some other European countries. The Coordination develops common activities for its members, through co-operation, with the aim of promoting European cinema, improving circulation and raising public awareness.
The members pay a fee that finances these activities, the members also contribute financially to specific projects. Other sources of financing are private and public grants, particularly from the European Union.
Besides these common activities, the Coordination encourages bilateral and multilateral co-operation among its members. The Coordination ensures that the issues affecting film festivals are highlighted when the European Parliament makes policy decisions. The Coordination distributes a report to these institutions, and in addition to other international organisations, on film festival matters.
The Coordination has produced a code of ethics, which has been adopted by all its members, to encourage common practise in professional practises. The Coordination is also an information centre and a place for festivals to meet.

Media Programme
Fleeting times of celebration and encounters, film and television festival nevertheless play an extremely important role in the promotion of European films. These events screen a considerable number of audiovisual productions, acting as a near obligatory means of securing commercial success: without festivals thousands of films and videos would remain, buyer-less, on the shelves. The number of spectators now drawn to festivals – two million – ensures their real economic impact… not to mention their cultural, social and educational role, creating increasing levels of direct and indirect employment across Europe.
It is evident that the MEDIA Programme of the European Commission support these events, endeavouring to improve the conditions for the distribution and promotion of European cinematographic work across Europe. To this end, it aids more than 100 festivals, benefiting from over million Euro in financial aid. Each year, thanks to their actions and the Commission’s support, around 10,000 audiovisual works, illustrating the richness and the diversity of European cinematographies, are screened. The entrance into the Programme, in May 2004, of ten new countries – Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Malta and Cyprus can only increase the fruits of this labour.
In addition, the commission supports the networking of these festivals. In this area, the activities of the European Coordination of Film Festivals encourage co-operation between events, strengthening their impact in developing joint activities.
