Tracking Transience: The Orwell Project
Sie stellten ihre Fragen sehr gründlich. Sie wollten jedes einzelne Detail wissen: Was ich dort gemacht habe? Mit wem ich gesprochen habe? Was ich gesehen habe? Wo ich geschlafen habe? Sogar was ich gegessen und getrunken habe, wollten sie wissen. Irgendwann waren alle Zweifel beseitigt. Zur Erleichterung meiner Freunde, meiner Familie und der Kollegen, bin ich nun offiziell kein Terrorverdächtiger mehr – nach einer dreistündige Lügendetektor-Überprüfung, die neunmal wiederholt wurde. Mittlerweile sage ich „Du“ zu den FBI-Agenten, die an meinem Fall gearbeitet haben und zu meiner eigenen Sicherheit teile ich ihnen immer meine Aufenthaltsorte mit, besonders wenn ich die USA verlasse.
Diese Erfahrungen haben mich dazu gebracht, freiwillig eine künstlerische Arbeit zu entwickeln, die fast jeden Aspekt meines Lebens öffentlich macht. Ich habe mich bewusst dafür entschieden, mit dem FBI zusammenzuarbeiten bis zu diesem Punkt meiner Arbeit, der an Kollaboration grenzt. Diese Arbeit zeigt erschreckende Parallelen zu einer gewöhnlich in der Rechtsprechung und beim Strafvollzug angewandten Methode, den Fußfesseln. Nur, dass ich mich selbst entschieden habe, sie zu „tragen“, und dass die bei dieser Methode angewandte Technik sehr viel weiter entwickelt ist und so kann sie, bezogen auf die Details an Informationen, stärker in meine Privatsphäre eindringen. Die Arbeit besteht aus einer Sammlung von Fotografien und einem Kompendium auf Internetbasis, das es ermöglicht mich und meine Aufenthaltsorte zeitgenau zu verfolgen.
Seit Dezember 2003 kann mein persönlicher FBI-Agent (und jede andere Person mit Internetzugang) mich online aufspüren und beobachten. Momentan, ist das Gerät auf semi-autonomen Modus gesetzt. Somit ist das Hochladen von Aufnahmen möglich, versehen mit den exakten GPS Koordinaten der Orte, an denen die Originalaufnahmen aufgenommen wurden. Von meinem Server aus wird das GPS Tag an die „United States Geological Survey“ (USGS) gesendet, die eine Luftüberwachungsaufnahme meines genaues Aufenthaltsortes zurücksendet. Mein Server verbindet dann diese Karte mit meinen hochgeladenen Bildern und kleinen „Thumbnails“ von bereits zuvor verwendeten Bildern in der webbasierten Datei, die dann von jedem Computer mit Internetzugang zu öffnen ist.
Mit Hilfe von GPS, dem World Wide Web und anderen Technologien, die ursprünglich für den militärischen Gebrauch vorgesehen waren, möchte diese Arbeit jedes Detail über mich so vollständig sichtbar machen bis zu dem Punkt, an dem deutlich wird, wie stark die neue „Homeland Security“ und die „Patriot Act Laws” der USA Züge einer „Invasion“ trägt.

Between June and November 2002, I had been the subject of an investigation by the FBI as a possible terrorist suspect. I was at a residency overseas while this was initiated. The lead tip came from the former owners of my storage unit who reported to the police “an Arab that had explosives and fled on September 12”. As I returned to the US on June 19, I was met at the airport by a FBI agent who rigorously interrogated me on my whereabouts and activities and frequent flying patterns. To make a rather long story short, upon returning home, I spent the next 6 months frequently meeting with FBI agents from anywhere between 30 minutes and 4 hours each time justifying my life and my choice to travel frequently to seemingly unusual destinations.
Their questions were extremely thorough. They wanted to know every detail of everything: What was I doing there? Who was I speaking with? What did I see?
Where did I sleep? And even down to what I ate and drank. I was eventually cleared and to the relief of my friends, family and co-workers, I am officially no longer considered a terrorist – after a 3 hour long polygraph exam which was repeated 9 times. In the end I am now on a first name basis with the agents that worked on my case and I constantly report my whereabouts to them for my own safety, particularly when I leave the country.
These experiences have led me to voluntarily develop a work of art which in fact opens just about every aspect of my life to the public. I have actively decided to cooperate with the FBI to a point where the current work now borders on a collaboration with them. This work acts and behaves frighteningly similar to a device more commonly identified by law enforcement and corrections as a “prison ankle bracelet”, except that I choose to “wear” it and that the technology involved in this device is far more developed and therefore more invasive of my personal privacy in terms of access to the detail of information available. The work is a collection of photographs with a web based companion that tracks me and my points of transit in real-time.
Since December of 2003, my personal FBI agent (along with anyone with access to the web) has been able to look me up online to track me. Currently, the device is in a semi-autonomous stage allowing uploads of images tagged with exact GPS coordinates of where the original image was shot to my server which then sends the GPS tag to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) which returns an aerial surveillance image of my exact location. My server then compiles this map with my uploaded images and small thumbnails of the previously used images into the web based file which is then accessed through any computer with internet access.
Using GPS, the web and other technologies originally developed and intended for military use, this work hopes to make every detail about myself completely transparent to the point where it clearly demonstrates how invasive the new Homeland Security and Patriot Act laws in the US are.
